For the first time Philadelphia used pants of this type in the 1981/1982 season. However, after the 1982/83 season, the NHL banned cuperrolls for safety reasons - they were made of nylon, which worsened ice grip.

This resulted in players crashing into the sides at higher speeds. In addition, goaltenders have complained that the black fabrics make them lose sight of the puck.
